body thinks of when the subject of werewolves and vampires comes up?"
"I don't know what you want me to say. Bats? Fangs? Silver bullets? What?"
"How about evil? You ever hear of a werewolf that was a Boy Scout or a vampire that didn't freak out at the first sign of a cross?"
"No. But how much of that stuff is true? A silver bullet can't hurt you, can it?"
"Kazie said not. I hope I don't have to find out."
"So you're worried you're some kind of evil monster? Don't you remember what Paula said? You're no monster. Well," she said, running her hand up his thigh, "at least most of the time you're not a monster."
He refused to be cheered up. "Sometimes I don't know what I am. I've been running around trying to keep all these feelings bottled up. At times I feel like I'm slipping away. I look at people differently; I don't like the way they smell or the way they move. I find myself hating the day and counting the minutes until the sun goes down. I guess I'm beginning to like being a wolf too much and it scares me. I'm worried that I might hurt somebody without meaning to. I'm worried that killing is becoming too easy."
He looked over and saw the expression of concern on Kyna's face.
"That all you're worried about?" she asked.
He decided to give her a break. "And I'm worried you'll take me home to meet your family and I'll lift my leg on the plastic plants."
She chuckled and squeezed his thigh. "Not to worry. I'm an orphan. Saint Agnes of Baltimore is my family."
"You never told me that. We're both orphans?"
"I guess. All that crap I told you about my family, I don't even have any aunts or uncles."
"Yeah? Well, I've got a sister, but we don't get along. She lives in Utah. Got half a dozen kids."
